Mission: Season 6: Echoes of the Zynari
1824 words - 3.6 OF Standard Post Measure

Sthilg let out a sigh as he placed the trays to the food down on the small buffet table he had been filling. So many snacks reminded him of the crew who had passed onto the hunting ground.

He sighed again. Nothing he could do now.

He had cleared out one of the wards with chairs and benches. He needed to do a check on his team, find out how everyone was holding up.

He looked a the doors waiting for whoever was the first to arrive.

Walking through the doors deep in conversation were Alicia and Heather, busy comparing notes on the happenings around the ship, and concerns for younger family members. They both paused talking as they walked into the room.

"We're here!" Alicia grinned as she looked towards her father.

"Hello doctor" Heather smiled warmly as she walked over to the replicator and ordered herself a drink, glad to see it materialise with no problems.

"Is that actually working?" Kara looked towards the replicator as she entered the room. "Ours is requiring poetry to get anything out of it!"

" I theaned it with a wrench and it ssseemsss to be working just fine." Sthilg replied with a cheeky grin.

Kara grinned. “I’ll have to remember that!”

J'Air, Rani and Matt then all arrived together. Matt moved towards the replicator and followed Heather to get himself a drink. He turned back towards J'Air and held up his index fingers in the shape of a capital "T" letter. The ACMO gave him a thumbs up and grinned at him. "You have to train them young" she joked generically and although Matt replied with a scowl he quickly followed it with a grin of his own. "Sweetner or salt?" he asked with a smirk, knowing full well there was never going to be a time she would want salt but pretending he might retaliate for the comment she'd jokingly made. "Neither thanks, I'm sweet enough" J'Air replied and accepted the Terran Rooibosh Tea that he brought her, proving that he already knew what type of tea she usually liked. "Thank you" she said, knowing better than to try to sip at it yet as it would be very hot right now.

Rani had asked for a Vulcan Raqberry Juice and Matt had somehow managed to carry all three drinks, pushed up against each other between his hands for balance. The Junior-Grade Lieutenant took hers too and thanked him as well. Unsure if it was the right time to just dive into the lovely buffet the Doctor had laid on, the latest to arrive stood holding their cups and looked around waiting, chatting as they waited for others to arrive.

" Help yourssselves to the food everyone," Sthilg said to the gathering crowd.

Nodding their thanks J'Air, Matt and Rani moved as one towards the food table. "I'm starving, this is a real treat!" Rani said as she picked up a plate and started to load on some food. Taking a plate and a fork, J'Air followed suit and Matt, un-usually one step behind, also collected himself a snack before joining the others at chairs in the middle of the meeting space.

The doors parted with a faint hiss as Ensign Iozhara stepped into the ward. She paused just inside, taking a quick measure of the room--the gathering of familiar faces, the low murmur of conversation, the scent of warm drinks. Her gaze shot briefly to the buffet, then to Sthilg.

She moved toward him at an unhurried pace, weaving between chairs without drawing attention. When she reached his side, she waited until he glanced her way before speaking.

"Doctor," she said quietly. "Doctor Sylorik and Doctor T'Kek were transported to Holodeck Two earlier this afternoon. It's just come up on internal alerts--environmental controls are malfunctioning. Engineering's on it, but access is locked down until they finish a full diagnostic."

She paused, her expression calm. "It's to do with these system malfunctions, but somehow they transported there with several other Vulcans."

Iozhara smiled warmly at her colleagues, trying to convey calmness and control. However, she knew Kara and Heather were not buying any of it.

Noticing the exchange between the incoming Ensign and the CMO, J'Air saw the troubled shadow of an expression that seemed to pass across Sthilg's usually unreadable Gorn face, so she decided that she ought to put herself closer to him as was proper if she were needed to assist him in any way. She moved to a closer chair and sat beside him supportively.

Sthilg let out a sigh. He'd have to speak to them later. " Okay, everyone. I've called you here today for a group chat. I know thingsss have been hard for usss. We are alone, far from home, with no help. I need to know what we can do to improve the ssship'sss situation until we can get home."

"Could we improve the Crew Wellbeing by organising something that would be both distracting, entertaining and relaxing all at once? Something to boost morale or lower stress levels, like perhaps a concert or a series of them, featuring different styles of music - something to please everyone and choice between the moods they might each convey?" J'Air offered as a suggestion to answer the CMO's enquiry.

Alicia nodded. “Crew gatherings are a good way to raise morale, but with our mischievous guests around having too many people in one place could prove too big a temptation.”

" A valid point perhapssse we could organissse sssomething when he current sssituation is over?" The gorn suggested.

"I'll get some ideas in place and start planning for later." J'Air agreed. "It's the sort of thing that will need a lot of organisation so a long slow run at it could be the best way to go!" she nodded, agreeing to put that on the back burner so to speak.

"I'm happy to help out with that when the time comes along." Matt volunteered.

"Thanks Matt, I'd be glad of that then." J'Air replied with a broad smile.

Rani had been thinking as well and offered a different response to the CMO's question. "Would if help morale if we did a run of extra medical check ups to make sure the crew aren't getting deficient in their vitamins, minerals and electrolytes? We've been having an abnormal amount of minor injuries lately and perhaps we could pick up on something, even if it's just exhaustion, then we could help those who might be out of sorts?"

Iozhara raised a hand and waited patiently for Rani to finish speaking. All eyes turned to her as she spoke.

"It's not too often we see crewmembers willing to come in for checkups," she said with a laugh. Her eyes flicked between a couple of medical personnel she knew were equally guilty of avoiding their regular appointments. |

Clearing her throat, she continued. "We could plan a small gathering--an open invitation to the crew--and have it catered with healthy food options. I'm not saying we trick them, but... well, maybe I am saying we trick them."

Almost everyone responded with a smile or a chuckle, each knowing what she meant 100%! It was so true.

J'Air grinned. "Yes, we'd have to trick them to get them in here but if it was a nice, fun, light experience then perhaps those who were "lured" (another chuckle) in early on, might tell their friends that it's not like a real check up?"

"Yeah" Matt added "We're supposed to be raising morale and good feelings of well-being" he shrugged comically and got more smiles back.

Sthilg smiled. It felt good to know his staff still had the Starfleet spirit in them. " We will have to note all of them down and sssee what we can do. Now, what can we do to improve medical care?"

“Medical care on this ship is already second to none, although we are having to be cautious with supplies for now.” Emily offered a smile from where she’d been sitting quietly taking in people’s opinions. “I think we should be cautious trying to trick people into coming to sickbay though.”

"Coax? Persuade? Incentivise?" J'Air offered alternative suggestions for the wording and intent. "But I take your point Emily regarding the random use of precious and much needed supplies and also your very wise advice towards caution against letting anything slip in the direction that might be seen - rightly or wrongly - as coercion or trickery. You're right of course."

" All excellent pointssss. Anyone elssse want to add anything?" The gorn added.

“Let’s just be careful, our guests seem to be willing to stretch their playful fun a bit too far.” Alicia added. “Gathering a lot of people in sickbay at any point may not be a good idea.”

J'Air nodded slowly. "Another good point" she agreed.

" All good pointsss. If anyone elssse hasss anything to add pleassse sssee me. Everyone elssse pleassse help yourssself to the food I'll sssee you around. " The old gorn said with a warm smile.

J'Air, Rani and Matt, having already had one plate of the delicious food were very slightly slower to go back for more until some of the others had a chance to get their "firsts" - as was only fair, but there was plenty supplied and there was more than enough for seconds for all!

"I'm going to presume to speak on behalf of us all, Boss" J'Air approached Sthilg with a warm smile of her own. "...by saying thank you for your thoughtfulness in providing us with such a generous and delicious spread. It really does make informal and low pressure meeting like this become more of a friendly family type gathering bringing all the Department together and making sure we none of us have to skip lunch as we so often find ourselves having to do."

Holding up her glass of Rigan monkberry juice, J'Air proposed a toast. "Thanks to our lovely Chief" she proposed. Matt and Rani repeated the toast and took swigs of their own choices of beverage in tribute to their Departmental Head.

Iozhara glanced around, realizing she was missing out on the finger food before someone handed her a glass of juice and a small bite to eat.

Sthilg smiled at how happy his staff was. Despite all of this he could still run an effective little hospital all alone in the dark.

Alicia walked over to her father offering a warm smile, she was one very proud daughter.

Sthilg returned the smile as he opened his arms to give his daughter a hug.

Accepting the hug and Giving her father one in return Alicia smiled. “You are an amazing Doctor, and a wonderful father, and none of us would be without you.”

" I know my dear. i know." the gorn smiled as he looked over the happy faces of his team.
