Mission: Season 6: Episode 6: Conglomerate
Location: Main Medical
Timeline: MD1/15h00
3779 words - 7.6 OF Standard Post Measure

When the pods reached the Elysiums shields, they were caught briefly, before pushing through. Each one then slammed onto the hull at various locations on Elysium, the spinning drill heads digging into the solid duranium hull plating as if it was thin aluminum.

::The bridge shook again as the pods slammed against the Elysium’s duranium plating. The sound of drilling reverberated through the decks.::

As soon as the pods latched on, the front hatches irised open and the hounds poured out, attacking anyone nearby, killing everyone in front of them.

As soon as the pods connected with the hull, new alarm klaxond began ringing through the ship. "Breach! Intruder alert!! We have breaches on decks five, eight, ten, fifteen and twenty!"

In medical, Sthilg was already moving. " Prep for casualties and make sure any patients are secured in ward two." He yelled to his staff

Alessandra who had been quiet since she had completed her retraining after centuries, moved with the rest of the staff, bringing out trays and prepping for incoming wounded.

Zuriñe and Petty Officer McGavers guided the medical grav sled with Chief Warrant Officer Man'darr on it towards the Medical Bay. Chief Man'darr was critically injured but she had managed to stabliize him, now he needed to be placed in ICU and get further treatment.

Zuriñe was mad as hell though. Her lab was damaged and came close to being compromised. Add to it that arrogant S.O.B. Colonel Azhul breaking protocols even further. ~Didn't the Academy train those idiots in anything other than breaking things?~ she thought to herself. She then shook her head as they entered the Medical Bay and its chaos. ~Back to work; no rest for the wicked indeed, may the Goddess help us. Zuriñe thought.

A short time later, Gunnery Sergeant Gami came through the door. Her armor covered in blood, though not her own, save for the little bit on her glove from where her nose had bled from exerting her Betazoid abilities. Her head still throbbed as she stumbled and leaned against a bulkhead for support. "Where is Gunnery Sergeant Moses?" she asked a nearby doctor who was treating a security officer.

T'Kek turned to face the woman. "Gunnery Sergeant Moses... I believe he's been taken into surgery. Are you injured?"

Gami shook her head slowly. No...I don't think so," she replied. She felt numb and exhausted.

"Have a seat," T'Kek told her gently, "We'll have someone check you over as soon as we can."

A few moments later, Chief of the Boat, Master Chief Petty officer Chuck Finley, was brought in with several more injured. Though his injury was serious, he refused treatment, until those either worse off, or junior in rank, were seen first.

Leilani had been taking a moment to clean herself up, Moses’ blood had been covering both her hands where she’d been trying to help him, she just hoped he’d make it out of surgery. Having changed into some clean clothing as well she stepped out to help with those gathering in Sickbay. She walked over to Finley seeing that he was injured. “Chief, you need treatment. You’re not going to do anyone else any good if you end up worse off.”

Chuck was having difficulty breathing when Leilani came over to him. His left shoulder and upper left chest were both bleeding fairly steadily, as the two barbed projectiles were still sticking out where he was shot. His eyelids were starting to droop heavily as he tried to reply. "May-maybe you ri...." he then collapsed to the deck where he was standing, unconscious from the amount of blood he had lost.

“I need some help over here!!” Leilani called out for whoever was free to assist her move Finley. “I need to get the Chief onto a biobed.”

Hearing the call for assistance Zuriñe looked at Petty Officer McGavers "Get him to I.C.U., then get out here and assist with triage."

"Aye, aye Ma'am." replied Petty Officer McGavers.

Zuriñe hadn't waited for the response, Med Bay was controlled chaos and she was needed. She glided over to where the Chief and a medic was assisting him. Along the way she snagged a spare Medical Tricorder. She knelt next to the injured human. She quickly ran the Tricorder over the Master Chief.

Zuriñe looked at the Staff Sergeant assisting him, "Why the hell was he not triaged and sent into surgery?" She snapped at her, some of her residual angry spilling over. She took a deep breath and calmed herself, "Apologies Sergeant, help me get him on a biobed and then you can assist me with field surgery. Any questions?"

“It’s alright, and no questions” Leilani offered a brief smile. “To answer your first question I don’t know, but I think the Chief was probably wanting others treated first. I was with another patient so I wasn’t out here.” She aided in moving Finley to the nearest biobed.

Zuriñe grunted as she lifted the Chief up onto the biobed. "Just what we need, another 'hero' syndrome individual. Remember this Sergeant, the only thing the Chief here accomplished was ensuring he would not be available anytime soon, and trust me I have a feeling we are going to need him."

Once the Chief was on the biobed Zuriñe ran another sweep over her patient with the medical tricorder. "Set up the surgical frame and let's get to work. I hate meatball surgery, but the Chief brought it on himself. He can get the scars removed later."

Meanwhile Alicia, having made sure her mother and newly born siblings were comfortable, headed out into Sickbay to lend a hand with triaging the arrivals. She wasn’t a nurse but she had enough training to be able to manage.

Gami wasn’t sure what to think with all of the wounded. It brought back memories of Betazed during the Dominion Invasion. She still felt light headed and drained as she sat in the chair. Her armor felt like it weighed hundreds of pounds. At least her nose had stopped bleeding from the telepathic exertion as she turned to see a woman walk into sickbay who didn't look wounded. 'Must be a helper,' she thought.

As Gami sat there, one of the younger Marines came by, and stopped when she saw her. Moving over to Gami, the young corporal, one of Moses' first squad comms operators, spoke. "Gunny," she had a tired smile on her face, as she held her left arm, which was in a sling. "I just heard that Gunny Henderson made it through surgery. He's gonna be down for a while, from what I hear."

On Deck 9 - 15;00 hrs: *When the pods had reached the Elysiums shields, they had been caught briefly, before pushing through. Each one then slammed onto the hull at various locations on Elysium, the spinning drill heads digging into the solid duranium hull plating as if it was thin aluminium. ::The bridge had shaken again as the pods had slammed against the Elysium’s duranium plating. The sound of drilling reverberating through the decks.:: As soon as the pods had latched on, the front hatches irised open and the hounds had poured out, attacking anyone nearby, killing everyone in front of them. As soon as the pods had connected with the hull, new alarm klaxon had sounded throughout the ship. "Breach! Intruder alert!! We have breaches on decks five, eight, ten, fifteen and twenty!" it had announced at maximum output.*

At the time, Ensign Matt Kensington MD, had been in the Gym. He had rushed to try to get to sickbay but the turbolifts weren't responding, or were stuck somewhere else perhaps? He tried the Jefferies' tubes but found them chock full with other fleeing staff and civilians. A woman had fallen right in front of him and he had automatically pulled her out of the tubes in order to treat her twisted ankle. He had looked around for his med-kit which he realised he had left in the gym and had sat his patient down while he ran back for it.

Returning as soon as he humanly could, he had used the regenerator inside to fix the ankle and had then helped the woman back into the Jefferies' tube, staying with her to be sure she wasn't jostled again. They had and slowly made it to Deck 12, and Sickbay, eventually.

They arrived and left the tubes with the others thronging there, Matt now carried the patient on his back in order to get through to the main bay for the Triage Room, where he left her telling him that he'd saved her life. He would have stayed to deny this but he could see there was a lot to be done and went quickly into the fray, assisting with the incoming wounded. He saw the COB arrive and looked around with surprise not to see J'Air. By association he had expected to find her here.

On Deck 35 - 15:00hrs *When the pods had reached the Elysiums shields, ............the alarm klaxon had sounded throughout the ship. "Breach! Intruder alert!! We have breaches on decks five, eight, ten, fifteen and twenty!" it had announced at maximum output.*

On her way to meet Major Kett for a Starfighter Simulator Lesson, Lt jg, Rani Anderson MD never got all the way there as the alert sounded just as she left the turbolift at Deck 35 and had started walking. She had turned to return to the lift just as a few Marine Medics had rushed along together and bundled into the lift sweeping Rani along with them.

It seemed perfectly reasonable to join forces with these medics as they stopped at Deck 20 and spilled out into what was clearly a scene of complete carnage which was Rani's first sight of what was really happening. She felt compelled to help as the efforts of just three medics on this Deck seemed a drop in the ocean and it was exactly that until more Marines arrived.

It was some time later when Rani left the others and tried to get back to Sickbay - the turbolift by now was not responding so she began to climb. And climb, and bumped into other casualties on Deck 15, where she stopped as well, but this deck did seem to have more help by the time Rani arrived. She did a little that seemed helpful and then left them as well, climbing again.

Three more decks up the tubes, in the crush of others, also climbing and some coming down the other way, confused and all trying to get to either their stations or somewhere else safer. She persevered and, exhausted by all the climbing, Rani finally arrived at Sickbay barely in any state to do much but after reporting that she was here at last, and grabbing a coffee, she rallied and went to the Triage Room to get directions towards whichever patients were waiting to be seen next. She barely got one person onto a bio-bed before the room beside her lit up with blue light.

.... Continued from Post " School's Out"

OLD: The blue lights that dematerialised and transported the group to Deck 12 began to fade just in time as another ‘Handler and canine’ pair came from what seemed like nowhere, spotted them and began to rush towards them snarling. ON:

The group of four rematerialized in Sickbay. J’Air immediately looked around to see that chaos had descended here as well. She saw the first of the school children coming in, Teachers herding them and on seeing her there, coming towards her.

Unsure at first what was going on here, J'Air allowed the first few school groups to congregate very briefly, where she was and then redirected them to the "Decontamination Suite #2" whilst she asked Paws to book in their own two casualties with the Triage Office, pointing her to the Triage Room.

Next she sought out Sthilg but discovered that he was - naturally, operating.

She tried to get to Lt-Commander Kelea-Salik, who she was told was in the Triage Room and, judging by all the patients streaming in, was more than likely flat-out. Spotting Rani, looking dreadful, her chest heaving and her face red with effort, J'Air asked if she was alright and she stated she just needed to get her breath back. J'Air looked her over dubiously and Rani elaborated that if she just had this cup of coffee and some water as well, she would be fine.

Having to take Rani's word for her condition, J'Air then asked her if she knew 'if the Decontamination Suites were currently being used, as she wanted a place to put the traumatised children where they wouldn't have to see any more of the horror that was apparent here than they could avoid, especially as they'd already been frightened half to death as it was.'

"I've only just arrived myself" Rani explained. "I was on the Starfighters Deck when this broke out and I feel like I've been climbing Jefferies Tubes all my whole life, yet squashed all into half a day!" Slurping at her coffee, Rani took as much strength as she could from the refreshment whilst making her way, still carrying the mug, towards the Quarantine Suites. "I'll go there now and see what's what" she agreed, and the Teacher who had been with J'Air as soon as he came in, nodded and following Rani to see what and where there was space being proposed for his young charges. "Thanks" J'Air put a grateful hand on her colleague's shoulder and hurried on.

Sthilg was busy with one of the first casualties, his artificial arm currently mending the damage the boarder's weapons had inflicted on the poor ensign. The back of his mind kept trying to drift to his family and his newborn children, but his medical mind kept fighting those thoughts back. He was needed here. Lives needed to be saved.

J'Air had finally made it to the Triage Room and was asking where she was needed most/first. She emerged from there much paler than she went in, despite the day she'd already had, clearly there had been worse to find out. Chuck was in the ICU which was also the best place for the ACMO to get to, as those were the most critical patients, other than those in Surgery, so she went that way, stopping (even though every part of her screamed to her not to delay) to assist where her skills and experience were needed along the way. By the time she reached her destination it hadn't been more that a dozen minutes although it had seemed like eternity to J'Air, and her face was wet with tears by then. She was overwhelmed with the hideous loss of life and limbs inflicted on the ship; full of anger and outrage that what ever those creatures and the "handlers" were, and that they were here wreaking so much harm and havoc; and personal anxiety in her need to get to Chuck but being held back by her medical duties on the way.

She approached the ICU almost at a run along the last walkway and rushed in. She found Zuriñe working at a bio-bed with the Med-Arch extended and some surgery being performed. "Report Lieutenant? What's the patient's status?" she said, hauling out her standard "Doctors' unreadable face and forcing it into place, quickly brushing away any trace of the tears with her hands. She moved within sight of the LCARS on the Med-Arch on the opposite side to Zuriñe so that she wasn't interrupting any work that was underway. If Zuriñe didn't have time to break concentration to reply, J'Air needed to glean the information from the readouts to get up to speed as soon as possible.

She couldn't look at the beloved face of the COB even whilst anaesthetised, perhaps even more so in that situation.

On entry, the ACMO had heard the words "Hero Syndrome" but hadn't processed it yet. She had also heard something about "Meatball Surgery" whatever that was, but she could imagine, especially when the idea that scars could be removed later was also mentioned. All of these were worrying but in such a state of emergency....?

~No, not even in such a difficult and urgent moment.... ~ her mind argued silently. It was only when she processed the comment that the 'Hero' mentioned was the love of her life and the most honourable and selfless man she had ever met, that J'Air's mind tried to explode out of her mouth and a distinct and carnal desire, born out of all the trauma and horror of this day as well as of it's own hideous self, to inflict the kind of monstrous injuries on the lovely and innocent young medic before her, who was doing her best to save said, love of J'Air's life's own life. The conflict, contradiction and hurt all seemed to render J'Air speechless. "Report Lieutenant" came out through ground teeth and the query about the COB's Status was so low as to almost be a growl.

Zuriñe was carefully removing the second barbed projectile from the COB's shoulder. She was carefully suturing and blocking all the veins and arteries around the projectile, like she had done on the first barbed projectile. She had already secured the first barbed projectile in a sterile petri tube for further study.

Zuriñe didn't even look up when she heard the tense voice of Lieutenant J'Air. She calmly stated the obvious, "Patient has sustained injuries from a minimum of two barbed projectiles. I have already removed the first and I am in the process of removing the second. My concern is both the blood loss and possibility of poisoning from the projectiles. I have already set the medical computer to doing an analysis of the patient's blood and have started a wide spread anti-venom and anti-biotic regime. Over all I believe the COB will survive this, though I foresee him needing extensive rehab and cosmetic surgery."
As Zuriñe was talking she expertly removed the second barbed projectile. "All right Sergeant please place this in the second petri tube, please be careful this one seems to still be pumping toxins."

Zuriñe handed the barbed projectiles over and began the delicate process of repairing veins and arteries. During this whole time never looking up from what she was doing.

Watching the efficient way that Zurine removed the second vicious looking barb with such expertise and care, reassured J'Air and she began to take deep breaths. She glanced over the notes on the monitor beside the Bio-Bed and was relieved to see that Zurine had done all that she would have done herself at this point and in such an emergency situation. She shuddered at the size and cruelty of the barbs and distracted herself by checking the notes of all the i/v connections.

What she saw made J'Air breathe deeply, calming more and more. ~Plasma, 3 units so far, yes, good thinking, blood loss.~ J'Air checked Chuck's blood pressure readings which were clearly visible on the monitors. ~Low but stable, a couple more units of plasma. I/v ABs, check. I/v AVs, check. ~ inside her head the ACMO was working out to see if there was anything she would have liked to have added. ~Lab tests already underway, check,~ More deep breaths and a lot more calm.

"You're doing a great job, Zurine. I am personally very grateful for that, very grateful indeed." J'Air finally said and stood back some. "Are you happy to continue or would you like any assistance?" she asked. Gently this time.

Zuriñe smiled as she continued working on her patient, "I think I have it under control, and I believe from the chaos around us your services may be required elsewhere. Also no need to apologize for your take on the situation, after all my specialty is epidemiology."

"I feel I must just say how sorry I am that I reacted badly when I heard you mention 'hero syndrome' and 'meatball surgery" - I'm afraid I was thinking I was going to find someone - " she paused for half a breath and went on, having chosen the word carefully. "...unsympathetic, and that led me to a further assumption that the same 'someone' might therefore also be about to do a bodged job to match the implications that I had taken from those words. I was wrong and I do apologise to you." she admitted frankly and with remorse. "If there really is nothing I can do to help you, then I will move on to the next case on the Triage List."

As she moved to leave Zurine to her work, J'Air felt a pang of guilt at leaving Chuck's side but she knew he'd understand, once he came round. The ACMO looked back. "May you let me know when he comes out of the anaesthetic please?" she added before hobbling on her wounded feet, over to the next Bio-Bed and newly admitted, critically wounded patient.

Zuriñe took a moment and looked up at J'Air with a soft smile, "It will be my pleasure. Relax your fears, he is in good hands. I should try and be more sociable in the future." She then went back to repairing the damage done to the COB. As J'Air was walking away Zuriñe added, without looking up, "I also would recommend that you get your feet looked at, Looks bad having someone working on you that hobbles."

"It might be easier to be more sociable with you, my friend, if you weren't so overtly judgemental yourself. I remain very grateful to you for your excellent work today but I'm not able to accept your concept that I might look bad whilst saving more lives, despite still having cuts in the soles of my feet from helping to rescue a school full of children before I even got here today." the ACMO replied, trying very hard to like this person for their impressive skills and efficiency.

Sthilg sighed as he exited the surgical bay. Another life saved, but this was the eleventh surgery, and he had mvany more to do. " Bring in the next." He said to his staff as he picked up and drained a glass of water and another and another.
