Mission: Season 5: Episode 3: CAPETOWN
Location: FS 10001
5391 words - 10.8 OF Standard Post Measure

The two runabouts sped across the skies of the gorn world kicking up dust as they followed the road towards the dead city. FS 10001 was easy enough to find. The squat concrete buildings now a dark red colour stood out against the landscape.

From the map Sthilg had found the hospital was easy to find. It was one of the biggest buildings in the city. Like the other buildings, it was a squat concrete structure clearly going deep into the ground. An ancient solar array sat on it's top still following the rays of the sun. The two runabout pilots chose one of the more empty landings strips many of them still being full of wrecked skimmers and hover vehicles.

A thick layer of dust was kicked up as the two ship's landed blurring the screen for a second until the ship's pilots gave the word that they were down command from the cockpits.

Nenaa was first out of the door along with the two other marines in her runabout as they fanned out to secure the landing sight. The Orions eyes couldn't help, but be drawn to the wreck machines around them. She'd have hated to be here during the outbreak.

Katie exited with John Snow. "Mother of God... It's like every nightmare pandemic scenario I've ever studied... Marines." She distributed several holographic tags to the Marines. "If you come across Gorn remains of any kind. Please sound off about their locations. Tag them and stay the hell away from them."

Leilani looked around as she paused in the shuttle hatchway before stepping out. “Good heavens! Look at this place!” Just looking around gave her the creeps. “I’m sensing life but I’d say from the small amount of it it’s just our people, maybe indigenous animals too. Definitely not enough to be people as well.”

Katie spoke. "If there are indigenous life forms here, stun them marines. If I can study how the virus effects the local flora and fauna, we'll be able to isolate it faster.. I'm suspecting the strain will be spread through liquid and by contact. Airborne viruses tend to have a shorter half-life."

" Will do." The gunny said as she and her team took their positions. " I think we won't be finding many remains around here." She said into the coms as her green eyes saw one of the other landing sites had a large scotch mark covering the concrete slab. " Oldest plague control in the universe."

Leilani looked around. “They burnt out the area, to try and stop the spread” She shook her head. “That’s awful.”

Katie spoke. "Surprisingly it is plagues that built our modern world. Sergeant Charles. It becan with the Bubonic Plague. How does a plague create the Renaissance? It began when people wondered what they did to offend God. Then they began to wonder if it was God? Plagues created a new sense of rational curiosity that brought civilization out of the grave. Like it or not.. The Bubonic Plague both killed and enlightened humanity."

Baeryn stepped out behind Sergeant Charles and stayed silent as she gave a look around. She tried to picture what the planet may have looked like before... disaster hit.

Myne came out sheepishly after the others disembarked. Looking around she chose the safest path possible. Do not talk, do not make bad jokes. Just shut up and listen and do as you are told. This was a terrifying sight, truly, but she had herself under control. A quiet expression as her mind went through the sequences of assembling a subroutine for classifying plants based on various variables. It was a good exercise to keep her mind occupied right now so it wouldn't go to dark places.

Nenaa kept her eyes down the sights of her rifle until her foot connected with something. Glancing down she saw she'd kicked a small pile of canisters. It took the translator a second to translate reviling them to be a mix of oils ranging from cooking to power generator fuel. They must have been out of almost anything with the body disposal she thought. " Hey..." She began before a noise roared through the quiet Panning her sights around she saw a long line of dust was being kicked up from down in an embankment to the left of the hospital. Trying to place the sound only one thing came to her mind. " Is that a train?" she asked out loud.

Leilani was surprised to hear that, “A train!? How can it be? There’s no one down here to run the trains.”

As impossible as it was a massive rectangle of steel sped past the hospital it's front lights sending a red beam through the thin dust layer. A faint trail of sparks erupted from it's wheels as it began to slow down before it vanished from view.

Dr. Taylor noticed it as well, It was incredible.. unlikely. But there it was, she even felt the ratting of the hospital while the train sped down its tracks. She walked out of the hospital to notice the train disappear. Her hands flew to her medical tricorder and she began scanning. Even scanning Leilani and Nenaa. Finally herself.

"There's no breaches in our suits. Physically we're fine.. I'm wondering if this is some kind of external influence." Katie noted. "Someone or something toying with us."

Katie had read Tate's mind as the counselor stepped out and took in her surroundings. Sullivan was not convinced their suits were impervious to all manner of viruses, including those that caused hallucinations. The other alternative was equally disturbing. Could someone be messing with them?

"There is no external influence the train is a drone." Beeped the Exocom who had teleported over to the track for a better look. After tracker beaming something from the short grass he returned with a red sign with bright white letters. Warning no driver in train. Stay off the tracks. " It is remarkable it still running after all this time."

"Am automated train running on it's own after all of this time?" T'Kek asked. "That is a long time to run without maintenance."

"Surely whatever power source that was used to fuel the train should be depleted by now. No?" Baeryn asked, not believing for a second they weren't being tricked by something or someone.

"I agree." Dr. Taylor noted. "Trains do not fix and run themselves. I'm wondering if there's someone else here. It might be worth our time to look into this."

"I agree," T'Kek said as he looked around. "But should we set up the camp first?" Personally, he would feel better if they had a secure place to use.

"Well, nothing says that the power source should have ran out. If anything, if I had been the one building a power source for the train, I would have included a recharge system, maybe a few solar panels, a recharge feature when going down slopes or activating the breaks. It would have even be fun to add a small antigrav generator to lighten the weight of the train and reduce friction. I think I could make one that lasts a long while, maybe add power cells too just in case. Also the composite materials are also important.." Stopping, Myne looked at the others. "I am rambling, sorry."

"Actually that is a very accurate and logical assessment, Lieutenant. You're keeping your mind open to possibilities that may be vital to understanding what's happening here, but try not to speculate too much." Dr. Taylor noted. "Lieutenant Redal. I'll need your help getting power to the hospital."

"Oh right, yes Doctor! Yeah, I will keep focused, sorry for speculating. This place feels and looks kind of amazing. I would have loved to see how this tech works in particular. Don't worry, I'll handle getting power back up!" Myne nodded eagerly and turned to look at the hospital build itself.

" Looks like it's solar generator is still working." the Orion Marine said gesturing to the pannels that were tracking the sun on the roof.

Leilani looked up. “They must be extremely efficient to still be collecting energy after all this time, from what I know of them solar panels generally had a limited lifespan.”

Stubby digitigrade boots padded out of the Runabout as M'Tuuri quietly moved on past everyone else, her tail swaying stiffly inside the confines of her environmental suit. "Even if it isss a hospital... if they had any sssense they'd have barricaded themselves inside, ssso I doubt we'll be able to just walk through the frrrnt door..." She purred, her voice reverberating inside everyone's helmets with a low rumble.

"I'll sssee if I can find away inside, but I'll stay within comms rrrange..." M'Tuuri added as she broke out into a gentle jog.

Katherine spoke. "We could try the direct approach." The doctor noted. "Find a door or a wall we can blast into. From what I understand, these Phasers are quite potent."

"Doctor, if possible, could we like check a bit around first? Not sure if after all this time blasting things won't hurt the structural integrity of the building. Maybe we are lucky and there is a generator outside?" Myne proposed looking at Katherine.

A slight clinking caught everyone's attention. A small piece of metal had fallen from a rusting sigh and the cause was clearly visible. Sitting on top of the sigh was what appeared to be a rust shaded three-eyed feline-only instead of a mouth it had a large grey beak. It's top eye was clearly open, but the other two closed. " Well looks like the local species have survived." The Orion marine said as she view the creature.

Baeryn couldn't hide the looks of disgust when she spotted the beaked feline, " And now I feel like i'm part of a bad horror movie." She muttered to herself. Turning back to the crew, "We first would need to identify the element in which the walls and door are made of before using our phasers to blast our way in. Though the idea is intriguing." Using the comm she tried to communicate with LT Sh'iss "--any luck on finding an entrance yet Sh'iss?--"

"--Maybe if we landed a bit closerrr Lieutenant...--" M'Tuuri quipped as she moved down the vast debris-strewn steps that surrounded the entirety of the structure, its sunken ground-level entrance giving it the feeling of being more akin to a bunker than anything civilian. "It's a rrreal mess down here." She added quietly, catching her breath while staring at a long since burnt out transport shuttle, having clearly crashed down the steps and into the side of the hospital, coming out far worse than the thick concrete wall.

It did however conveniently displace and remove a sizable section of concrete barricades that surrounded the lower sections of the hospital entrance, ploughing through military hardware and civilian hover vehicles alike as it skidded into its final resting place.

Clearly, somebody was desperate to reach the safety of the hospital, though, like the rest of the planet, it had all gone horribly wrong.

"--Main entrrrnce looks unsafe though, a lot of strrructural deformation from a crashed transpurrrt...--" M'Tuuri chirped as she followed the destructive path of the transport, mindful of the jagged and sharp metal that littered the broken concrete stairs. "Dropping a beacon for you to follow..."

The small oval disc left her gloved hand, landing on a thick pile of dust and ash as she carried on, leaving its dull yellow light to pulsate behind her.

Whavi pulled out her tricorder, bringing it to life with a few taps before using it to highlight a path toward M'Tuuri's beacon. When the path was illuminated for her, she gestured for the others to follow as she started the trek toward the entrance M'Tuuri had located.

"--We're on route to your location now.--"

"--Acknowledged..--" M'Tuuri purred as she tapped on her wrist, shutting off the comms and leaving her alone amongst the eerie silence of the world.

That was until she got closer to the hospital, finding the slag under her boots cracking like glass as she approached, concrete and everything else melting from orbital fire, left as a perverse and horrific time capsule.

"This plurrace is a tomb..." She mouthed quietly as she turned her back on the crashed transport and moved past the ruined entrance, walking silently towards the left wing of the hospital. She made note of the scorch marks against the thick walls with her gloved hand, rough shadowy outlines, some the same height as Sthilg, others a lot smaller... their bodies protecting the wall from the initial blasts that vaporised the area, immortalising their last moments onto every surface her eyes could find.

"Can't imagine it's any better inside..." M'Tuuri added as she dropped another tracking beacon on the left most corner of the hospital, leading the team to follow her towards a large service ramp that carved its way into a lower level of the hospital, a garage of sorts from the amount of military and civilian vehicles piled up inside its choked entrance.

Katherine walked with the team and began talking lowly. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."

Myne shrugged and went to follow Baeryn. Seemed like the best course of action for now. Initiative was not exactly an instinct or skill she felt like trusting. She had to admit to herself thought as she walked after her Chief. This planet was something else, this place was something else. In a sense, a small treasure throve... *Stop, don't think like that Myne. Stop it!* Shaking her head she tried to chase those thoughts away. A smile crept onto her lips though as she heard Katherine speak. “The goal of all life is death.”

Nenaa walked up behind Katherine and gave her a reassuring. " Hey, it's going to be okay." She said reassuringly as the team followed the path M'Tuuri had layed. They had arrived at the building's massive entrance which looked like straight out of an old earth horror film. Two APC's bearing letters of CPF had been drawn across the entrance with layers of wire forming a passage to get through the main doors. Remains of tents and scattered equipment still littered the ground. A body lay slumped against one of the APC's wearing a gorn combat uniform and body armor. The lizard's body had mummified in the climate and looked oddly peacefully as if he was fast asleep. His arms clutched something close to his chest wrapped in a cloth blanket. " Poor guy." the Orion said quietly guessing what the gorn soldier was clutching tightly.

"So much death here," T'Kek mentioned quietly as he looked at the mummified remains of the Gorn Soldier.

Tate's lips thinned in dismay as the death surrounding her. It wasn't unexpected but still not something she faced regularly anymore. Naturally, besides watching her own step, she took a moment to take in the reactions of those around her. They were all behaving professionally thus far and she expected no less. Still, she knew the emotional repercussions of such an experiences often didn't register immediately. "Deep breaths all."

The green eyes of the orion panned around the garage until her flashlight illuminated something. " Stairwell leading up to the entrance by the looks of it. Should we check it out we could see if we could open the doors?"

"Tried it..." M'Tuuri chirped up, though she wasn't visible to the team. "Whatever hapurrned to the main entrance is blocking the door, only opurrns a few inches... couldn't see anything but rubble on the other ssside." She added, her voice straining as she pulled open a door to a lift shaft, parting the two sections to reveal an empty void.

"Over here..." She mewed, finally turning on her helmet lights and peering at the team through the remains of the vehicles that littered the garage. "

Dr. Taylor turned on a flashlight and began to manuver through the garage and into the ambulance recieving area. "Most hospitals keep the Emergency Room Close to the garage and the Emergency Entrance. ICU should be the next floor with a dedicated elevator. There should be trauma centers on every floor." Katie noted. "But what I need is the morgue, and it will be in the basement nearby the incinerator."

Leilani followed on quietly, the eerie silence was enough to give anyone the creeps. It was a truly haunting experience walking through what would have been a busy area when the planet was alive and flourishing.

M'Tuuri peered down the elevator shaft as one of the sections she had parted slowly crept back to the middle again, creaking and squeaking as it did. "Hospurrtals don't normally go this deep underground do they?" She mused out loud as she untethered another beacon from her belt and dropped it off the side of the shaft, watching it clink off the sides every few seconds before vanishing altogether, the echoes becoming more and more distant with no discernable bottom. "Because this ssshaft has to be at least as deep as thisss building is tall..." She added, turning her feline shaped helmet up above, shining her headlights on the underside of an elevator a few floors above.

T'Kek walked over and looked down the dark shaft. "Could be anything down there from labs to storage rooms," he commented. At least he hoped that what was down there.

“Well… the ssstairs over there seemed clear going down…” M’Tuuri said as she carefully moved inside the elevator shaft, gripping onto whatever pipe or surface was available as she worked her way towards the maintenance ladder on the far side. “But I wanna go up, ssso you coming?” She teased, staring at T’Kek as she reached the ladder, purposefully leaning off with one hand to dangle over the seemingly bottomless pit.

"Surely there are easier and safer ways to go up," T'Kek responded. Sure, he enjoyed a good physical challenge but only a Caitian would think of climbing a cable in an elevator shaft.

"Suit yourself," She sighed as she started to climb, disappearing from view as she moved up past the elevator. "--The panel outside is fried... looked like water damage from the fire suppression system... the lift might still work from inside though...--" M'Tuuri continued on the comms as she pulled herself on top of the boxy machinery, taking a moment to look further up the shaft and noticing a few open doors several floors above.

"--But if it doesn't...--" She hummed, taunting T'Kek as she lifted a panel to reveal the emergency access hatch in the roof.

"Then I shall find a Caitian to carry me up," he teased back.

On the principle of 'Oooh a butterfly!!' Myne saw something. Was it a nicely covered ground cable, covered by some composite material to allow vehicles to drive over it? Why yes, yes it was. Myne split off from the group silently and in true airheaded curious cat fashion, she followed the cable. Now, when a building looks like a power station, might be one, have a power cable entering it and has 'Power Station' written on it on the side, it might actually be a power station.

The door was on the floor, blown up. The reason? Maybe the bodies in and out bearing the signs of battle might have had something to do with it. There had been a brief firefight here, but the sight of bodies only brought a smile on the Trill's face and a cheerful chuckle. Reaching down she wanted to play with one of the bodies before stopping, her face turning to one of strained effort. *No!! Stop it Redal!! I am warning you! Stop it!*

Straightening herself, beads of effort and sweat beads on her forehead from the strain, Myne entered the building and tapped her badge on the front of the suit. "Lt. Redal here. I think I found the generator. It took some shots, but I think I might be able to repair it."

"Shot's." The orion marine wondered. The details Sthilg had given them had mentioned no word of a battle taking place. Then again people panic when scared and this nightmare would scare anyone.

"We have not seen any signs of battle otherwise. Why would someone shoot a generator?" T'Kek wondered.

"No idea! Just a few little dolls, three, oh no four!" The transmission from Myne interrupted, her strangely fascinating tone coming back to her usual self. "Sorry, I mean I have no idea. Will look on them after I finish with the generator." She said as she unpacked her case and began to take off panels from the generator and began her work.

“Dolls!” Leilani shook her head. As a mother to be she couldn’t imagine the mass loses of children on this world. “So many dead, how do horrors like this happen? It’s horrific.”

"More signs of weapons fire..." M'Tuuri purred while lowering herself gently into the lift until she was hanging by just her fingertips. "wonder what hapurrned." She added as she finally let go, falling the last few feet to the floor, careful not to land on the mummified corpses that had filled the lift with a haze of dust.

Leilani stepped away from the others looking around her closest area, she hadn’t gone far before she stepped through a door and stumbled over some debris. Sprawling out on the floor amongst more debris she cursed as she got back up to find a tear in her suit. “Dammit!” She headed back out of the door. “Small problem here, my suit is damaged.”

T'Kek turned to look at Sergeat Leilani. The suit's self sealing gel had worked as it had intended and automatically patched the hole. He drew his Medical Tricorder from it's holster at his waist belt. "Let's see if any of the virus got into your suit.

Leilani nodded. “I certainly hope not! I don’t want to end up a plague carrier.”

T'Kek studied the readings for a moment. "Some of the virus managed to get in, Sergeant. I can give you a booster that will help combat the virus."

Leilani nodded. “Do it, if I do start showing any symptoms at least it’ll give the doctor something to study.”

T'Kek nodded as he opened his medical kita and pulled out a hypospray and loaded a immune system booster concoction and pressed the hyposray against Leilani's neck. "There, that should help. Be sure to let us know if you begin to feel unwell."

Leilani nodded. “I will don’t worry” she smiled warmly.

"--Hey, we brought phurrsers for a rrreason...--" M'Tuuri remarked, laughing to herself as she pushed a button on the dust-covered panel, blinking in surprise as the bulb flickered to life briefly before dying like the rest of the planet.

Moments later the lift jolted down, the seized up machinery and long since dried lubricants grinding loudly as the lift arrived at the garage level, though ever so slightly lower than it should have been.

"Lift works though..." She purred, triumphantly standing there with her gloved hands on her hips.

"Yellow! Redal here. Hot the generator online. Not sure how, erm, the hospital is doing on wiring, but whatever is still connected should have some juice now. This will not hold for long, a day or two, maybe more, who knows. Quuuuick update. The toys here that killed each other, were using kinesthetic rifles. No idea who shot up the generator, but it wasn't these guys." Myne conveyed her little discovery over coms after spending a bit of time actually poking the bodies.

Nenaa made note of that. All the gorn security appeared to be armed with old NZX 03 rifles. As she pondered that a faint white light began to pop into existence eliminating the area. An ancient-looking LCD screen fired into life with a map of the hospital.

Dr. Taylor began to take samples from the dead gorn to determine if the virus was dormant this whole time. She then sighed and spoke. "Poor things.. If you would have refrained from fighting each other, you would have made a full recovery." Katie noted. "The samples are displaying commonalities. It seems the pandemic here was on its way out. Without additional vectors, the virus could not mutate, so the half-life was reduced just to a few days or weeks."

" So is it likely......" The orion marine began as he torch light noticed something. One of the medical computers had been thrown to the floor with it's rear panel ripped off and chucked to one side. " That's odd." She said as she shone her torch into the empty cavity. " Less dust in here. Looks like it's been salvaged rather recently. "

Katherine drew her hand phaser. On stun as always with her ethical side. And examined the medical computer. "Hmm... It is a biological culture analyzer and its primary power junction has been forcibly removed."Rather recently I might add. Someone is scavenging components."

"Someone's been here. " The Orion said arming her rifle. " Attention everyone we may not be alone down here. "

Snow had moved towards the lift. " Would anyone like me to go first. If it breaks i can teleport out." The small robot asked.

"I recommend phasers on stun..." Katie told the Marines. "We don't know if this presence is really a threat. From what we've seen, they may simply be surviving on an abandoned planet." Katie then spoke. "I want to get the Emergency Room working, we may need it."

Leilani set her own phaser on stun, just incase they had any unexpected company. “I’m still not sensing anyone but us, though that doesn’t always mean a lot.”

" Could it be a species that....." The orion began before a channel crackled open. It was from the small team left at the runabouts. " Everyone be alert the mountain team has found evidence of fernegi scavengers being on the planet at least forty years ago. Everyone is to be on high alert. "

"Yet, this disturbance is newer than forty years," T'Kek commented.

"Yay! Ferengi!!" Myne chuckled and made her way to the hospital and the rest of the team. Unlike the others, she was unarmed. Carrying weapons was a touchy subject and she didn't want to take unnecessary risks. Tapping her combadge she contacted Baeryn. "Chief, generator holding, do you need me to check anything else?"

Snow had found the isolation ward. " lieutenant M'Turri can you open the lock. " the robot asked. He didn't want to break it. Panning his torch around the robot was amazed that only one of the four cells had a body in it covered by a faded white sheet.

"I can certainly trrry..." She mused, looking at her wrist readout before heading towards Snow, moving her way back through areas she had already explored, finding nothing of interest save for some curiously and rather permanently shut doors.

"I take it you don't want me to just phurrser the hinges off?" She grinned as she squatted down in front of the door, her tail flicking gently behind her. "Because that would have been my firrrst choice..." She added as she unrolled a pouch on her knee removing a small canister and sprayed a copious amount of lubricant inside the keyway.

She then lifted up two metal instruments, one slender and long and the other bigger with handles that rotated about its core and inserted them, one at a time into the rather archaic analogue lock.

" Correct. " Snow said as he watched her work as he continued to scan the area.

"Most locks are either bio ssscanners or have an external touch screen, you don't see many that rrrequire an actual key..." She purred as she slowly twisted the handles back and forth along the length of the rod inserted into the keyway, teasing it to tell her the code. "I mean, technically they are more sssecure, since rrrewiring a control purrnel is surprisingly easy..." She added as the lock made one final click, unlocking the door.

"Ta da..." She added with a rather enthusiastic tone as she stood up, letting the door slowly open with a loud droning creak of its hinges.

" Thank you." The robot said as he floated it. He immediately went to the one room with a gorn body and started scanning for signs of the infection. He let out a slight beep when he detected nothing. He then headed to the small lab. Most of the equipment here would need reapirs.

Tate shook her head. Were the surroundings not so creepy and serious, she might have laughed outloud at the mention of the Ferengi. That was all they needed. Sullivan was also worried about Leilani. The damaged suit was remedied quickly but still, there was a risk, a fact underscored by the figure under the sheet before them. "Dr. Taylor, would you like some assistance taking additional samples from the deceased?" If they had company, efficiency was critical she knew.

Katie nodded. "There's not much left to gather, but we could attempt to gather as much data on it as possible. Unfortunately, we'll never know what it was nor where it came from."

Leilani had decided not to venture off alone anymore she hung around with the others, she had to admit she was worried about her exposure to the outside air but she couldn’t afford to panic about it.

Snow had almost gotten the lab working, but he wanted to install a small power source to keep it running. " Snow to shuttle team can someone bring down the small generator." He said politely.

Damien had made the choice to stay behind with the shuttle and the pilots. The team had the Marines with them, and Commander Sthilg was pretty terrifying when he needed to be.

Walking round the shuttle, rifle in hand, he kept one eye on the pilots, helping move things when needed, and another eye on the horizon. Sure, they were meant to be alone, but who knew what they might encounter.

Hearing the request come through, he shouldered his rifle, tapping his comm badge as he did. "This is Lieutenant Blackford, I'm on my way." Walking over to the equipment, he grabbed the small generator, before heading in the direction of the lab.

As he walked away from the shuttle, he stopped, narrowing his eyes. Maybe his eyes were playing tricks on him, but he was certain there was something in the distance. But almost as quickly as he saw it, he blinked, and it was gone. Shaking his head, he sighed. He was going crazy.

A few minutes later, he was walking into the lab. "Where do you want this?"

Snow flashed a light towards where he wanted it as he carried on his work. " Is everything okay outside lieutenant?" the small robot enquired.

Damien walked over to where the light indicated, placing the generator on the ground. "I think so. I thought I saw something on my way in here, but I think it's just a trick of the light."

" May i examine your helmet's visor recording? " Snow said as he turned to face Blackford.

He nodded. “Of course.” He said, taking a step towards the small Exocomp. “What do you need?”

The small robot replicated a holo projector and held out a data crystal port. " Please insert your data crystal." He said camly.

Damien nodded, reaching up to his helmet and ejecting the small data crystal, placing it on the port as instructed.

The exocom took the crystal and played back a holograthic projection of what the marine had seen. Running a scan he paused on one frame. Highlighting something in the distance with a red outline. Something was definitely there as it move down and out of sight. " Snow to shuttle team please be on high alert we are being watched." The excom said with a slight hint of panic in his artificial voice.

Damien sighed, running a hand through his. "Well. Glad to know I'm not just going crazy." He said, chuckling dryly.
