Mission: Season 6: Episode 2: Survival
Location: USS Elysium, Main Shuttlebay
2843 words - 5.7 OF Standard Post Measure

Sthilg ran his hand over his head as he looked at the padd in his hand. Moving this many patients down to the planet would have been hard even with a fully working ship. Now he had to make sure this didn't go pear-shaped as the humans called it.

Now here he was making sure the temporary medical station in the shuttle bay would keep the worst patients stable as they waited for the shuttles to return from the planet's surface.

Having left Fernando aboard the Lethe to be moved to the surface medical facilities, Heather had set about doing her duties. She was feeling way past the point of tired, but she wasn’t going to stop now when she was needed. She offered a smile as she walked across to Kara, who was now conscious and slowly recovering from her entrapment injuries. “How are you Kara?”

Kara offered the best smile she could muster, she hadn’t yet seen Malakai and didn’t know if he was okay or not. “Okay I guess given the circumstances. I can’t say thank you enough for everything all of you have done for us.” She rested her hand on her rounded stomach. “When I was trapped, I thought I was going to die. That Malakai would lose both of us.”

“You’re both fine now” Heather smiled warmly. “It’s not going to be a quick recovery, the damage to your legs was severe. With limited resources right now your recovery will be slower.”

Kara nodded. “I know. Is Doctor Sthilg available? I’d like to speak to him.”

Heather nodded and looked towards Sthilg. “Doctor, do you have a few moments?”

" Off course my dear what is it." Sthilg said a his usually grandfatherly tone crackling through the tiredness in his voice.

Heather smiled warmly at Sthilg.“Kara asked to speak with you.”

" Any idea what about?" Sthilg said as he followed Heather.

“I think she just wants to express her gratitude” Heather smiled warmly. “I have explained that she has a lot of healing to go yet.”

The gorn nodded as he followed her to Kara. " Hello my dear how are you feeling?" he asked with a smile on his face

“Better, thank you Sthilg” Kara smiled warmly. “I know how busy you are...” she looked around, then back at Sthilg. “I just wanted to say thank you for saving me, and my son.”

" Jussst doing my job my dear. You jussst concentrate on looking after yoursssself and your ssson." the lizard replied with a warm smile.

“I will, that I promise you Sthilg” Kara smiled warmly. “Just remember how important you are to all of us, you are indeed a miracle worker.”

Heather smiled warmly as she left them to it. All in all she was feeling more than a little tired, and hungry. She’d bareiy had time to stop flitting between those in need, as well as caring for her son between his time with Fernando. She’d been feeling a little off ever since what had happened to the ship, but she’d put that down to worrying about their situation.

She was just wrapping up updating a patient’s records when her head spun, she took a moment to stabilise herself but a matter of seconds later she was flat out on the floor.

Emily had seen Heather suddenly fall to the floor, rushing to her side she looked around for the nearest doctor. “Doctor!... Elijah I need you!”

The usually blue haired doctor was quick to respond to her call, as he arrived he quickly knelt down scanning Heather. “She’s exhausted, and has a running temperature” he looked around. “Help me get her up to a bed and I can run some more scans, there’s an unusually high count of human chorionic gonadotrophin hormone”

Emily looked at Elijah in surprise as she helped him move Heather to the nearest bed. “HCG? Are we looking at pregnancy here?” She was concerned that if Heather was pregnant the presence of a temperature might not be good news.

He nodded, “Possibly or just a chemical imbalance more the reason to get her comfortable, hydrated and fully checked over.” Elijah with the help of those around him managed to get Heather safely onto a temporary bio bed. “Let’s give her a Saline drip to help her hydration levels and bring over the body scanner.” He asked Emily, prepping himself.

“Right away Doctor” Emily went to find the supplies, which were being carefully dispensed to ensure that they lasted as long as possible. Coming back with a saline drip she carefully hung it up, before helping to set up the body scanner. “The drip is up, and scanner is ready Doctor.”

“Perfect” he said focused on Heather, “Lets get her connected up.” Elijah set at position the scanner so that he would get a read out in her biometrics as well as any others that maybe growing inside her while he allowed Emily to prepare and connect the saline drip. She had proven herself to be a competent nurse and he wasn’t in the habit of second guessing himself. He started up the scanner and waited for the results.

Emily gently hooked Heather up to the drip, she was quietly cursing herself for not noticing Heather’s condition in the first place. “Drip is in Elijah.” She stood arms folded waiting to see what the scanner showed.

“That explains much” Elijah said stepping back and smiling, “Extreme stress and fatigue oh and 3 months pregnant will knock just about anyone out.” Heather vitals weren’t intensive, they require care and attention but fortunately nothing to drastic. “We should monitor her and continue to hydrate her, also let’s try and get her as comfortable as possible also perhaps find the father” he added.

Emily nodded and smiled. “That’s just... amazing! In the shadow of all the losses we’ve experienced now there’s new life.” She marvelled for a moment later before shaking herself out of it. “Fernando... I need to find Fernando.”

Just then Fernando came barreling in. "Emily!" His voice raised and he came to a stop in front of her. I heard Heather was sick. What is wrong with her? May I see her?"

Emily smiled as she held up her hands in a ‘calm down’ gesture. “Take a breath Fernando. Heather is okay, Doctor Carmichael is taking good care of her. She’s suffering from stress, fatigue, and...” Emily paused. “Heather is 3 months pregnant.”

"Yes, yes. Stress, fatigue and pregnant." Fernando replied automatically not even realizing what he was saying until his brain caught up to his mouth. "Wait. What? Heather is pregnant?" A huge smile slowly spreading across his face. "May I see her?"

Emily smiled and nodded. “Of course you can Fernando.” She motioned him to follow her. “We’ve got Heather on a drip, for rehydration and she’s currently unconscious. Don’t worry she’ll be fine, she just needs rest.”

Fernando followed Emily to where Heather lay sleeping peacefully an IV line in her arm. He moved to the side if the biobed and took her hand in his. "Heather, my precious Heather. You rest my love. I have just found out you are pregnant. What wonderful news! However you must rest and regain your strength." He bent forward and kissed her softly. "I do so love you Heather, rest. I will be here when you awake and we can make plans for our newest family member."

Emily smiled as she watched Fernando with Heather. “She’s lucky to have someone as loving as you Fernando. Stay for as long as you need, I’m sure Heather will be glad to see you when she wakes up.”

"Thank you, Emily," Fernando replied gratefully as he continued to hold Heather's hand, with his free hand he caresses Heather's face. "Heather my love, you are pregnant. Did you know and keeping it as a surprise? Well, you succeeded my darling, this is a marvelous surprise, a brother or sister for Cody." He bent down and kissed her softly. "I love you Heather."

Heather stirred slightly in response to Fernando’s kiss, her hand gently tightening its grip on his though she didn’t awaken.

Emily smiled as she moved away leaving Fernando to have some private time with his wife while he had the chance.

T'Kek entered the shuttlebay, attending to a burn patient on a stretcher being carried by two Security Officers. Right now, the burned Engineering officer was stabilized but healing his burns would require more time as they waited for a transport to come in. He spotted Heather unconscious on a bed. 'We need to set up shifts and down times or we will be worthless to our patients,' he thought. He could barely recall when he slept last. Had it been a day ago? He had been working the Theta Shift when everything went to hell. His uniform was still filthy with dried blood, tears, and burn marks from close calls with consoles overloading. This was one time he counted himself lucky to be half Vulcan as he was physically able to go without sleep longer than humans.

A few moments later, Tink entered the shuttlebay, dressed in her Marine flightsuit. After looking around a few beats, she spotted the ship's CMO. Smiling, she moved over to his side. "Hi, Doc! I heard you were needing a few pilots to transport the injured planetside?"

" We do. We have a lissst of who needsss to go down firssst." Sthilg replied handing her a padd.

Tink nodded. "If you'll give me the list, I'll get it down to the Arine launchbay. We are trying to get a few more transports online. That way, we can start to figure out how to sort each patient."

Sthilg drew two padds and handed them over. " Here you go. included the ssspare jussst in case. Critical patientsss will need to go in the ambulance runabout. "

After putting the spare PADD in one of her cargo pockets, Tink quickly read over the lists. Nodding, she spoke up. "I agree about the critical needing the medical shuttle. As for the walking wounded, once I get the Marines planet-side, and the camp is ready, I'll start ferrying them down. As they mostly seem to be able to sit normally, I could take fifteen at a time down to the planet." She handed the PADDback over to the large CMO. "Would that work with you, Sir?"

Neri came in, she was dressed in basic uniform with a light weight jacket over her shoulders. "Oh I love the cold" she grinned. "Am here to help."

Jason came out of the shuttle looking for Orin and saw Neri. "Hey Neri, can you help me to the preflight for the shuttle? I'm waiting for Orin, but he hasn't arrived yet and I want it done so when the Doc says he's ready, we can go without delay."

The andorian nodded and headed over to him. "Sure lets do this."

"Good." Jason replied simply. "Let's get to it. Be one less thing we have to do when we are ready to head to the planet." With that he turned and headed back into the shuttle.

Miraj came over, frowning at a padd. "I'm still short another six pilots, most of my people are... unaccounted for. "You're going to have to cut another ten patients from this trip, even cycling people as fast as we are."

Orin came from the upper bay of the Shuttlebay, where Shuttlebay Observation and preparation was. He was carrying two large medical containers towards the shuttle and he saw Jason talking with someone. Walking over, he dropped the containers for a moment and said, "Sorry, the Quartermaster said that these were the last of the medical supplies for this run and it took me a few minutes to get them down here, even with help. How are we on preparations to begin taking people down?"

Jason looked over at Orin. "I was beginning to wonder where you were. I asked Neri, to help with the preflight checklist as I want us to be able to leave as soon as the Doc says we can go. We're loading patients as we speak. So hopefully we'll be ready to go shortly. Get the containers loaded and secured and we'll proceed from there."

Neri smiled. "I'll go check the other shuttles." she offered.

"Is there anything that I can do to help? I might not know the backbone of the shuttles, but I can help out with a preflight checklist if you're needing some help to get them done on some shuttles," Orin offered Jason and Neri.

"You can start the preflight checklist on the medical transport so we can go down to the planet as soon as the CMO says so." Jason replied.

"I'll make sure that everything is loaded onto the Medical Transport. Is Doctor Sthilig already on the surface or are we transporting him down with us?" Orin asked, picking up a PADD to do some of the checklist.

"He is coming down with us. He's just making sure everything is in order for when we depart." Jason replied as he slid into the pilot's seat to help with the preflight checklist.

Orin got into the Co-Pilot seat and began working on the console in front of him. He looked over at Jason and said, "Do we know how many people we're transporting down in the first round? I've never done something like this and I'm not going to lie, I'm a bit nervous. I don't want to mess this up."

"Taking a full complement of injured down to the planet. Can't give you an exact number only that we'll be full. As for being nervous. We're all nervous. Just do the checklist, work on instinct. don't think jus do." Jason replied as he looked at his checklist.

Checking over some of his own checklist, trying to help Jason and the rest of the team out, Orin just nodded and kept working quietly. He was a little bit of a fish out of water. While he had some experience with older shuttles from the last century or two, he hadn't upped his recertification in several decades because he didn't have the time....or didn't make the time.

A beeping sound sounded in the shuttlebay to indicate an incoming shuttle. A moment later, a Type 11 shuttle entered, whipping around so that it's facing the shuttlebay doors and settled onto the deck as the shuttle's rear hatch lowered. A moment later, Captain Addison Leyton exited the shuttle still in her flight suit. "Hey," she greeted with a wave as she approached the group.

Elijah was grateful to see another shuttle and pilot, "Hey - We have a few patients to be loaded plus an extra" He explained looking to where Heather was being cared for, "Do you know if any maternity models or equipment have been sent down?"

"Yeah, there are maternity equipment down already," Addison said as she approached the medical officer. "Colonel Azhul recently had a baby so all necessary maternity equipment were among the first to be set up in the Sickbay Fab Complex."

“I’ll help out where I can as well” Emily smiled as she joined Elijah. “I’ve left Fernando to have some private time with Heather, she’s still unconscious but stable.”

"Thats great, hopefully we can get her settled on the planet and I'll speak to Sthilg about removing her from duty shifts, well when we finally have a duty shift and know who can work." Elijah said smiling and then grimacing realising that some of the usual names may be missing for obvious reasons.

"Okay," Miraj aid as others started to pick their ships "The entrance cave is pretty big, but the route through to the medical building is on the tight side. The Runabouts can't make it, but the 9s and 11s can. So anyone who cant be beamed or stretchered needs to go to one of them. We've got rudimentary ATC in place outside the cave entrance. When you've got visual with you actual eyeballs on the cave mouth, com ATC and they'll give you your landing spot. Look out for the parking marshalls, they will make sure you are in the right place, and double check routes in and out are clear. Anyone in a 9 or 11 will need to watch for them whilst they are going in through the caves."

Neri was bouncing on her toes, "Oh I love snow, can we go?"

Dr. Taylor entered the shuttlebay. "Dammit all to hell" She noted as she got her son into the bay.

"What is the matter?" T'Kek asked as he approached Dr. Taylor.

"Yeah, anything that we can help you out with?" Orin said right behind T'Kek, wanting to make sure everything was running smoothly.

Soon enough the shuttles were off with their wounded.
